FEEDING YOUR PUPPY

Our puppies here at LILPAWS are feed 1/4 cu Diamond Naturauls puppy kibble soaked in warm water with a teaspoon of ceasar puppy food in it. They are feed this twice a day. We also keep dry kibble and fresh water down at all times .You have received sample of puppy food your puppy is eating. Please stick with this food for at least a 2 weeks and gradually switch to food of your choice. Never starve a puppy to try to force him/her to accept a new food. This will make your puppy very sick. We suggest adding baby chicken food with the dry food to entice it to eat. If your puppy still will not eat give the puppy some nutra-cal or dyne .Do not let your puppy skip a meal. Never feed cook chicken bones, chocolate, raisin, grapes and onions to your puppy or dog. These are all toxic to dogs.

Making your puppy feel safe

Remember when you fist bring home your new puppy it will be scared. Bringing home a puppy is much like bringing home a newborn. Our puppies stay with their moms and littermates until they leave for their new homes. When you bring your puppy home he/she will be lonely and lost at first. It is not recommended to sleep with your puppy. This will ruin their house training or the puppy can be injured by falling off the bed or rolled on by its new owner. Just talked to the puppy and make him/her feels secure.

Confinement is Essential to training

We recommend using an x-pen, which can be bought at any pet store. If you do not have the room for this then a puppy gate in the doorway to a bathroom will work as well. Within the x-pen or bathroom place a bed, food and water dishes and litter box in there. We use newspapers inside our litter boxes and your puppy will be familiar with this setup before leaving our home. This will ensure a house trained puppy in no time at all. We recommend your watch the DVD you received with your puppy on litter box training. If the owner allows to much freedom the puppy will have accidents an that is where you will confuse the puppy and have a hard time house training them. It is always the owners fault that the puppy is not house train, these puppies are smart and willing to please it's owner.

Hypoglycemia

Chihuahuas are susceptible to low blood sugar called hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is an emergency .A little bit of sugar given to your puppy can save it's life. Small dogs have a very small fat reserve around the liver. When the puppy gets stressed, chilled, plays to hard and misses a meal the fat reserve is used up and the body will begin to draw upon the blood sugar for energy..If this condition is left unchecked the puppy will get weaker until it falls into a coma and can Die the good news is that this condition is easily treated. Your responsibility as the new owner is to keep the puppy's stress level low as possible. Signs of hypoglycemia are drunk eyes, inactivity, staggering like it is drunk, falling down, just laying down, followed by what looks like sleep. This condition will form into seizures, spasm and coma, then death. If the puppy seems sleepy, wake the puppy up,stand the puppy up and make sure the puppy can walk normally. If the puppy lies back down, falls, staggers, then get some sugar into the puppy with out delay. Sugar in water, karo syrup, honey, nutra- cal, dyne all will work .In severe cases a vet will need to be seen to save the puppies life. We recommend karo or dyne in the puppies water till it is 4 months old to prevent this from happening.

Accidents Can Happen

Be careful when you walk, Chihuahua can get under foot. Remember they are on you lap or you may forget they are there and drop them when you stand. Beware of closing and opening doors, always assume they will run out. Never walk your Chihuahua with out a leash. Puppies have no fear of heights. Do not leave a puppy unattended on a bed, sofa or other furniture. We stress to make it a rule for children to hold the puppies or dogs while sitting on the floor to prevent any accidents which could injure your puppy. Watch those electrical cords!!! Make sure your dog is not left outside where hawk, owls or other big birds will steal and kill your dog.

Vaccines

All of our puppies are started on their shots before leaving our home. We give all puppies their first shots at 6 weeks of age. Your puppy will need it’s next set of shots 3 weeks after it’s last shots. Do not give your puppy it's rabies shot at the same time the puppy receives another shot. Your puppy will be up to date on all shots and deworming. You will receive your puppy’s health record the day you receive your puppy. Make sure to keep your puppy's health records and registration papers in a safe place. We do not keep copies of these and will not be able to replace them if they get lost.
